Casa Micolau and the tradicional Andorran casa pairal

The tradicional casa pairals, still in existance today, are the family homes of Andorran families. “Cal Micolau” was founded in 1870 by Antoni Perellada Roger in the village of Arinsal, (1450m) municipality of La Massana. The “Era del Micolau” is one of the oldest buildings in the village of Arinsal. Of classic Andorran construction, built in local stone with wooden beams and traditional stone tiled roof, the “Era” formed part of the casa pairal and was used mainly in the winter for keeping cattle on the ground floor and storage for hay or grass on the upper floor. The “Era del Micolau” was used to keep sheep and then later to treat the wool from the sheep until the middle of the 20th century. The clipped wool was spun by the local women into yarn which was either sold or used to make thread for clothes. The men would be tend cattle and horses in the fields next to the river and up until the base of Coma Pedrosa, the highest mountain in Andorra (2950m) The “Era del Micolau” was restored recently into a modern and comfortable hotel, preserving the original stonework, wooden beams and stone tiled roof.
